WHAT IS HENNA?
The words "henna" and "mehndi" usually refer to an ancient and natural form of temporary body art. Henna
is natural because it is a paste made from henna leaves, lemon juice, sugar, and essential oils like lavender.
The word "mehndi" simply refers to the art form of applying henna to the skin. After henna
is mixed into a paste, it is applied to the outer layer in the skin, layed down on the skin like cake decorating.
It is applied in intricate patterns that leaves a stain on the outer layers of the skin. The longer henna is
left on the skin the darker the stain will be. It is recommended that the paste be left on for a minimum of 5 hours,
but a beautiful stain will still appear even if it is left on for 2 hours. During the first 24-48 hours after the paste is
removed, the stain will develop from a bright orange to a dark reddish brown, or even plum color. Henna is
a flowering tall shrub or small tree, native to tropical and subtropical regions of Africa and southern Asia. It
produces a red-orange dye molecule, lawsone. This molecule has an affinity for bonding with protein, and thus has been used
to dye skin, hair, fingernails, leather, silk and wool. About Earth Girls Henna Professional women with a love for henna and menhdi body
